Food meets dance in “A Samsui Love Story: A Food & Dance Affair”
They say the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, and we can’t argue with that. If you’re looking for a date-worthy event that combines love stories with a love for food, look no further than the theatrical performance of “A Samsui Love Story: A Food & Dance Affair” by Project Plait X Tung Lok.
The story starts in 1937, with our heroine traveling long and far before ending up in Singapore, working as a Samsui woman. Meanwhile, our hero is an undercover spy, in the guise of a satay man. She falls in love with him not knowing his deep, dark secret. He falls in love with her not knowing what the impending war will bring. We won’t give anything else away!
Find out how this gripping love story ends at the only place where Mod-Sin cuisine and contemporary dance meet in beautiful harmony.
You’ll enjoy a five-course menu of modern Singaporean dishes as dancers gracefully portray the love story through contemporary dance movements. Come with an empty stomach and a handful of tissues — you’re gonna need ‘em.
When: July 17-20, 7:30pm
Where: Caldwell House Alcove @ CHIJMES, 30 Victoria Street #02-04/05

Theater dining
Enjoy specially curated dishes by Chef Roy from Escobar while watching narrative theater about food culture and its place in Singapore at Makan Cosmopolitan 2018.
The story explores the themes of emotional attachment and involvement in Singapore. Watch as familiar heartland characters engage in discourse about food culture and its place in Singapore, as they queue up for their favorite nasi lemak. That’s right, the backdrop for the story is the familiar (and highly hunger-inducing) hawker center.
Be the first to experience this theater and dining experience by creative pioneers Ape Studios. Save the date for Makan Cosmopolitan 2018!
When: July 6-7 and July 13-14, 8-10pm
Where: Escobar, 20 Cross Street, #1-23/24, China Square Central

Back to basics with local producers
It’s time to get down to earth (literally) and find out more about the food you eat and its ingredients. What exactly are you putting in your mouth and body and where are they sourced? In Back to Basics – Savour Your Heritage Kuehs, local producers will share how they grow their produce, how to take care of it the right way, and exactly how the produce is used in heritage confections.
There are three different workshops being held: the first is about edible leaves and flowers used in heritage confections with Nong, the second is about sugars used in heritage confections with Cheng Sugar, and the third focuses on kueh and mussels with Ah Hua Kelong.
If you’ve ever heard that age-old maxim, “You are what you eat,” then you can’t miss this event!
