A new cafe for the Punggol folks — Fat Po may not be the most accessible, since you’ve gotta hop on the LRT after your trip to the end of the North East line, but it makes up for the tiresome trek with a quiet ambience that’s ideal for a peaceful night out. Set up by the same folks behind Whisk and Paddle, the casual spot goes for cozy chill vibes with warm lighting, pots of greenery, and a simple layout of modest furniture.

But before you dismiss it as yet another brunch-style eatery, Fat Po’s menu actually reads pretty interesting, with an Asian spin on typical “Western” dishes like fries and burgers. Besides small plates and snacks, it also offers rice bowls, salads, and pastas.

Start off with appetizers like tang xin egg ($6.80; with avocado mayo, ebiko, and bonito flakes), Fat Po fries ($8.80; tossed with Nyonya sambal, parmesan, and furikake), battered enoki fries ($8.80) or mapo fries ($8.80), which are basically crispy tau kwa strips covered in mapo ‘ragu’ and cheese.

For something a little more substantial, sharing plates like Nan-Ru pork belly ($10.80), “LaoMaZi” ngoh hiang ($9.80; deep fried prawn and pork rolls), and Sanbei Lala ($9.80; wok-fried clams with shoyu, mirin, garlic, chili padi, and scallion) are also available for you to munch on.

If you’re not much of a leafy greens person, then the salads here ($14.80) come with meats such as pulled pork and smoked duck — try the garlic and egg calrose rice bowls topped with angus ribeye and grilled king oyster mushroom ($18.80) or fried boneless chicken leg and enoki fries ($15.80).

Alternatively, pastas on the menu get creative as well, featuring options like Thai basil pork spaghetti ($15.80) with fried poached egg, beef brisket spaghetti ($17.80) with radish and onion rings, and mala mushroom spaghetti ($14.80) with battered oyster mushroom. Otherwise, there’s always the har cheong chicken on bolo burger buns ($15.80), which seriously sounds like great hangover grub.

Even the desserts get the fusion treatment, led by a teh crème brûlée ($6.80) served in one of those retro kopitiam cups with a handful of buttery cookies on the side, alongside mango pudding with sago ($6.80) and chocolate peanut lava cake ($8.80)
