Casual outdoor joint Camp Kilo Charcoal Club fires up hearty portions of roast meats

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — What is Camp Kilo Charcoal Club? It’s kinda like the hipster version of a barbecue camp-out, if you ask us. Tucked away on the ground floor of the same riverside building as Kilo Kallang (both are founded by the same group), the alfresco space is super casual and perfect for large, boisterous gatherings.

The evening crowd

Chillax at one of the mismatched chairs near the grill, or take your place by the counter, where twinkling string lights give off carefree party vibes. Either way, you won’t be able to escape from the scrumptious whiffs of juicy meats roasting by the crackling flames. (Seriously, the smoky aroma alone is enough to turn anyone into a hangry mess before the food arrives).

The space

Amidst the array of meats, the main draw of Camp Kilo is a massive 30kg pig that roasts on a self-made spit for over four hours, after being marinated in a blend of secret spices. The result? A pile of fork tender pork that you can dunk in the myriad of dipping sauces for extra tastiness. It’s sold by weight, so you can get $12/100g for different cuts, along with a side of crispy pork belly at $10/100g.

Whole roasted hog

Other hearty options include roast jerk or kai yang chicken ($10/half, $18/whole), fall-off-the-bone-tender chipotle BBQ pork ribs ($15/half rack, $30/full rack), grilled prawns ($18/6 pieces), and whole grilled snapper in garlic butter, jerk spices or soy glaze ($30). Of course, all these are subject to availability, so what you wolfed down one week may not be there the next.

Roast chicken

The sides deserve as much mention as the meats — there’s the pomelo salad with mango and herbs ($10), burnt carrots with plums, cottage cheese and fried garlic ($14), smashed potato with aioli, nam prik pao and scallions ($12), deep fried brussel sprouts topped with Japanese rice crackers ($14), creamy chipotle corn furikake ($10), and stewed kidney beans with coconuts rice ($12). Corn bread, potato rolls with jalapeño butter, and a pickle mix with cucumber chillies and radishes are also available ($5 each). And if you’re not done by then, fork out $8 for desserts like fried apple pie, s’mores cheesecake, cinnamon sugar donuts and dulce de leche flan.

The food

You almost feel like swapping ghost stories or belting out camp songs here — and we won’t judge if you do — but that’s just how cosy and chill the place is. It’s brings out the nostalgia of school camp days, only the nosh here is heaps better than the unidentifiable mush slopped on your plate at the cafeteria, and the cocktails will give you a pleasant buzz. We’ll definitely be back for more comfort food and laidback tunes.

So much yum

Camp Kilo Charcoal Club is at #01-01, 66 Kampong Bugis, 6292-2306. Fri 5.30pm-11pm, Sat & Sun 11am-11pm.
