5 restaurants in Singapore to feast on hairy crab creations this month

It’s the return of the hairy crabs! If you haven’t had a chance to savour the golden globs of creamy roe and sweet meat this season, read on to find out which restaurants are offering limited edition creations starring the crustacean.

If you’d like to be pampered, choose from two luxe seven-course set menus ($148-$180/person) — available at lunch and dinner — with specialties such as steamed hairy crab and cheese-baked crab shell with crab meat. Otherwise, pick your favourites from a selection that includes slow-cooked crab claw in pumpkin ($38) and braised rice sheet with crab meat ($28).

At Crystal Jade’s fine dining restaurants, you’ll find a plethora of dishes featuring hairy crabs that have been imported from Lake Taihu in China. Highlights at Crystal Jade Prestige include the hairy crab trio platter ($26/person) of suckling pig with crab roe and biscuit, steamed xiao long bao with crab roe and steamed crab shell custard, while the others offer choices like braised hairy crab meat with pea sprout ($45) and deep-fried spring roll with crab meat ($26/four pieces). Five- and seven-course set menus are also available.

Look forward to a la carte plates like baked hairy crab with ginger rice wine wrapped in lotus leaf ($68) and braised hairy crab roe, crab meat, scallop and beancurd soup served with rice crisps ($38). Set menus go for $118 and $128, with crab creations on the line-up among others such as deep-fried sea perch fillet with spicy lime sauce. 

If you’re heading to Min Jiang at One-North, try the hairy crab trio platter ($26/person) of baked crab meat in tomato, deep-fried crab meat with seafood and steamed crab meat xiao long bao. Sets menus ($118-$128/person) here similarly feature crab dishes alongside signatures.

Season of Hairy Crabs at Wan Hao

Here, hairy crabs appear in dim sums, soups, noodles and rice, with a la carte offerings such as deep-fried crispy bun with chilli crab ($10/two pieces), wonton noodles with crab dumpling ($18) and steamed hairy crab with glutinous rice ($78-$88/piece). You can also get set menus ($108-$118/person) that include the likes of milk stir-fried hairy crab with egg white and shrimp roe, and wok-fried rice with crab and prawn roe.

Splendid Crab Feast at Mitzo

The star of the show at Mitzo is the Sri Lankan Crab, which steps into the spotlight for the five-course menu ($98/person). Start with the dim sum platter of poached crab and shrimp dumpling, crab meat roll and deep-fried soft shell crab wrapped with salted egg charcoal puff, then move on to items like crispy crab claw filo with crab roe, and rice in superior broth with crab meat and crispy rice. To end off the meal, cleanse your palate with the peach resin and chrysanthemum aiyu jelly dessert.
