Oof, that hurts.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) yesterday filed charges against an alleged thief who was severely injured after his victim poked him in the right eye with — of all things — a toothbrush.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that the victim named Malou Luyang took a Vivian Transport cab from Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City on Monday night. She told the driver and suspect Zaldy Macatiag that she needed to go to the Sandiganbayan office on Batasan Road.

However, Macatiag reportedly did not take the usual route and instead drove Luyang to the village of Sauyo in Novaliches, reported Tempo.  It was there where Macatiag allegedly robbed her and even hit her repeatedly with a steel pipe.

But Luyang had the presence of mind to fight back and poke him in the eye with a toothbrush that she kept in her handbag, GMA News’ television show Quick Response Team reported.

She fled the cab, hailed a tricycle, and proceeded to the Far Eastern University Hospital where she sought treatment for her injuries.

Meanwhile, Macatiag was caught by the police when a traffic aide told them that a man who had an injured eye was brought to the East Avenue Medical Center. Luyang reportedly positively identified Macatiag as the man who allegedly attacked her in the taxi.

The police reportedly found a 16-inch steel pipe, mobile phone, luggage, and a sling bag containing multiple IDs from the suspect’s taxi.

In a statement, QCPD’s director Chief Superintendent Joselito Esquivel said Luyang was brave for fending off her alleged attacker but he also warned the public that it was “not advisable to engage armed suspects, especially if one has no training in self-defense.”
