Man eats 120 ‘santol’ seeds rushed to hospital

This is a man who loves his santol seeds!

A 51-year-old from Tagbilaran City, Bohol, was rushed to the hospital after consuming 120 cottonfruit (locally known as santol) seeds, a yellow-orange tropical fruit common in Southeast Asia.

Bienvenido Fernandez was brought to the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital after enjoying 30 pieces of the fruit, which had four seeds each, Inquirer reports.

Instead of gnawing on the sweet flesh and spitting out the seeds after, as most would have done, he swallowed all 120 of the supposedly “inedible” brown seeds. Each seed is about the size of a kidney bean.

The amusing thing? Fernandez had eaten santol seeds before, but this was the first time that his penchant for swallowing seeds sent him to the hospital.

Hospital physicians conducted an ultrasound on Fernandez. They decided to schedule a surgery if Fernandez would not be able to expel the seeds on his own.

According to a hospital clerk, however, Fernandez was able to flush out the seeds by Friday night.

We hope he’s feeling better now.
