Nostalgia is clearly one of the current trends among Filipinos online — just look at the Tropical Hut revival — and with that comes an outpouring of content that hearkens back to simpler times.
Ze Banez shared his take on a popular Baguio landmark, SM Baguio, and added his own retro tinge by filming the mall with a Video8 camcorder (yep, the one with the cassettes), making it look just like it was shot in the ‘90s.
The nostalgic filter clearly resonated with folk online, judging by the thousands of shares his video has earned.
Banez told Coconuts that he bought the old Sony camcorder from a shop at Porta Vaga by the Baguio Cathedral, and the idea of filming Baguio’s modern structures through old technology fascinated him.
“Unfortunately, [shops at Porta Vaga] no longer sell functional tape camcorders, and blank clean video tapes are getting harder to find. What drew me to it is the history and changes in technology. I wanted to see for myself the evolution in technology up close. My partial inspirations include horror movies and ’90s [pop] culture,” Banez shared.
Interestingly, SM Baguio very much belongs in the oughts as it was opened to the public in 2003. It stands on the location of the fallen Pines Hotel, which burned down in 1984.
