Earlier today, motoring journalist and popular social media personality James Deakin posted a story from a netizen that drove into an unmarked ditch in Pasig City last Sept. 18.

“I was traversing Mercedes Ave., Pasig, several meters past Luis St., when I saw that traffic has build up. I decided that I would make a u-turn and re-route to Luis St. Little did I know that that would be the worst mistake I would ever make in my 15+ years of driving,” the netizen, whose name Deakin did not reveal, wrote.

“You see, my car fell in a deep open excavation while I was making a u-turn to the other side. This stretch of excavation (maybe 10m-15m long) did not have any barriers and warning devices at all so it would be impossible to see that there was no pavement anymore, especially at dark (photos attached),” he added.

These kinds of unmarked open trenches are a common sight on Philippine roads. The photos the netizen sent show how it looks like for a vehicle to fall into one of them.

He detailed the moment he fell in. “I thought that the right front wheel just fell into a large pothole until I realized my car was continuously sloping sideways into a ditch. Thank goodness I had my seatbelt on so I was intact in my seat when the car tilted and I did not sustain any injuries (just a bloody index finger and a big bruise to my confidence).”

He said that passersby rushed to his aid and were able to pull him out of the car until emergency responders arrived and his car removed from the ditch.

Here’s hoping the Department of Public Works and Highways, the agency responsible for road construction, takes note of this incident.

Other netizens in the comment section echo the sentiment of the writer that road and traffic conditions in Pasig City are pretty bad.

This comment below says, “In Pasig, they dig up the roads, then they leave it without doing anything. There are a bunch of road projects in Pasig that take forever to finish.”

One long time resident testifies that instead of seeing improvement in her cities roads, things have only worsened.

“The traffic makes me want to cry!” she said.
