Twitter Lite launches in Philippines

Micro-blogging platform Twitter officially rolled out Wednesday for Philippine users its leaner, mobile browser-based version especially developed for users in slow internet environments.

Called Twitter Lite, this version promises it “minimizes data usage, loads quickly on slower connections, is resilient on unreliable mobile networks, and takes up less than 1MB on your device.”

“We also optimized it for speed, with up to 30% faster launch times as well as quicker navigation,” Twitter said in its blog when it announced the Lite version globally this April.

With Twitter Lite, one may use most features of Twitter by logging on to the site via browser. These features include one’s timeline, tweets, and messages.

For the Philippine market, Twitter Lite promises to be “an innovation developed… to bring the latest mobile web experience to match the network conditions… by minimizing data usage and loading content faster,” organizers of the rollout said in an invite announcing the event.

The same invite said Twitter is partnering with Philippine telecommunication companies Globe and Smart for this version.

Website statista.com says there are 8.5 million Twitter users in the Philippines currently, and that number may grow to 10.4 million in 2019.
