Turning Japanese: Abe to name rescued PH eagle ‘Sakura’

Anime fans, you can go green with envy. This Philippine eagle is going to get what most of you can only dream of: A Japanese name.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will name 2-year-old rescued Philippine eagle after Japan’s popular spring attraction, Sakura (cherry blossoms).

The naming rites will be held on Jan 13 in front of the Waterfront Hotel in Lanang, Davao City, President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown.

Sakura won’t attend the ceremony since it will be stressful for it to leave its sanctuary. Abe will instead receive a photo of the rare Philippine bird.

According to a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, “The eagle, which had been shot with a pellet gun  in the abdomen, was rescued last month near a river in Talaingod, Davao del Norte province.”

Prime Minister Abe is in the Philippines for a two-day state visit. He is the first foreign state to drop by Duterte’s hometown.

His itinerary includes breakfast in Duterte’s home in Davao, meeting with businessmen and visiting a Japanese-language school.
