Whoever said math and art don’t mix clearly need to watch this video.

Now viral on Facebook is a music video created by Grade 10 students of the Camarines Sur National High School. In the video posted by their teacher Sherilyn Saguirer last Monday, the students summarize everything they learned in class by singing them to the tune of hits from the movie-musical The Greatest Showman.

But they don’t just sing. The almost 10-minute was a full-on production with choreography, expertly shot camera angles, and creative editing.

“When ‘WOW’ isn’t even enough to describe this music video,” Saguirer wrote in her caption. “I am super proud of you!”

And she’s not exaggerating. The video has smooth tracking shots, students dancing on armchairs, and a chorus dancing and singing about the polynomial remainder theorem.

In a Facebook message to Coconuts Manila today, Saguirer said that the class of 46 students worked on the video as a group for their math subject’s second grading project.

“The goal was to recall some of the topics taught to them during the past grade levels or the past grading period. And since students love to listen to songs and can easily memorize song lyrics, I thought that it’s a good way for them to retain the concepts learned in math,” the teacher said.

Believe it or not, Saguirer said that the class was only able to focus on the project a week before it was due because they had requirements for other subjects.

Still, the teacher was very impressed with the output.

“The other classes did it as well but the one I posted on [Facebook] was the best among those submitted,” she said. “I was impressed with how well the class worked together to achieve a music video worth submitting. We didn’t expect it to go viral.”

The video now has close to 800,000 views, 28,000 reactions, close to 23,000 shares, and 1,500 comments, as of this article’s posting.

And Saguirer said they still can’t believe it.

“We were scared and shocked. Hahaha! But the students were very happy. They’ve been checking the video every hour to check the number of views,” she said.

Like the viral video, the film it was inspired by was also well received by audiences.

The Greatest Showman is a musical film released in December last year starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Michelle Williams. It is based on the true story of P. T. Barnum and his traveling circus. Although it received mixed reviews from critics, it performed well in the box office, grossing over US$434 million worldwide.
