Compared to these inmates, those at the New Bilibid Prison seem to have it easy during raids.
At around 1am on Sat, Aug 13, 3,089 inmates of the Cebu City Jail were were ordered to take off their clothes for a surprise inspection.
“The inspection was done based on a former inmate’s tip that drug users were posing as visitors, in order to buy and use illegal drugs behind bars,” reports Sun.Star Cebu.
“They have turned the jail into a one-stop-shop and a drug den. Some junkies posed as visitors in order to use shabu inside, because they were afraid of getting caught outside,” explained Police Regional Office (PRO) Region 7 director Noli Taliño.
The prisoners were asked to take off their clothes so the authorities could be sure that they were not concealing weapons or contraband.
A total of PHP4.6 million in cash and an estimated PHP1 million worth of shabu were confiscated. Other contraband such as laptops, flat-screen TVs, and cellular phones were also seized.
The report also pointed out that “four jail guards who were confirmed to have allowed the contraband inside the jail have been referred to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology,” it said.
