Smart to spend PHP1 billion for better WiFi service

We can’t tell for sure if this is a direct effect of President Rodrigo Duterte’s fix-it-or-else warning to telecom companies.

In very welcome news, Smart Communications has announced that it will be spending PHP1-billion to improve the speed of its free WiFi connections in airports, bus terminals, some government buildings and business establishments.

Upgrading works are currently underway at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (all terminals), Francisco Bangoy International Airport (Davao), Iloilo International airport, Bacolod-Silay International Airport and Dumaguete-Sibulan International Airport in Negros Occidental.

Smart Wi-Fi is also already available at the bus terminals of Alps, Five Star Bus, Isarog Bus, Jam Liner, Philtranco and Victory Liner.

The PHP1-billion is part of the PHP43 billion budget that parent company PLDT had allotted for capital expenditure in 2016 —meaning it’s been there long before Digong confirmed he was running for the presidency, okay?

In any case, Smart and PLDT executive vice president Eric Alberto says the company has been broadening the “Smart Wi-Fi footprint”.

We hope he doesn’t mean footprint in the sand, because we’d be sad to see awesome promises blown away by the wind.
