Slow net or Facebook addicts? Filipinos named top social media users in the world

So you think you spend too much time on Facebook reading updates about people’s meals and exercise routines? You’re probably right.

Filipinos were named the top social media users in the world in a study by United Kingdom-based consultancy We Are Social Ltd., and social media platform HootSuite.

Sites such Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter swallow up as much as 4 hours and 17 minutes in a typical Filipino’s day.

“It’s probably due to the same cultural dynamics that made us the text messaging capital of the world,” said Ramon Isberto, spokesperson for telecoms giant PLDT and Smart.

But really, it can be due to the slow internet too.

According to the study, there is a correlation between “poor fixed-broadband speed and time spent on social media.”

How did other countries fare?

“Brazilians and Argentinians followed closely behind, spending three hours and 43 minutes and three hours and 32 minutes on social media, respectively,” said the Inquirer report.  “The Philippines, Brazil and Argentina have an average fixed-line broadband speed of 4.2 megabits per second (Mbps), 5.5 Mbps and 5 Gbps, respectively.”

The Japanese were considered the least active with an average social media usage of only about 40 minutes a day.
