San Miguel Corp donates PHP1B for drug rehabilitation

The country’s largest conglomerate, San Miguel Corp, is giving a whopping 10-figure donation to the government to help build drug rehabiliation facilites.

“Peace and order is key to our country’s progress and development,” SMC president and COO Ramon S. Ang said in a statement, according to Philippine Daily Inquirer.

“By supporting government in this endeavor, we are helping create an environment that will enable various sectors of our society to participate in and contribute to our country’s growth,” he added.

The funds will be spent according to how “concerned agencies of government” see fit, the firm said.

SMC earlier donated PHP500 million in the wake of Typhoon Sendong, and another PHP500 million after Typhoon Yolanda.

For Ang, rehabilitation plays a part of the solution to a better Philippines.

The 125-year old firm conducted initial talks with Philippine National Police Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, who conveyed the need for more rehabilitation centers in the country.

The government has made it a priority to fight illegal drugs, but those efforts will go to waste if there won’t be added treatment facilities.

Currently, there are only 42 drug rehabilitation centers operating in the country, only 14 of which are run by the government, Manila Times reports.

Rehabilitation services at existing centers costs between PHP20,000 and PHP100,000 a month.
