If you own a business in Quezon City and your business name is in a foreign language, you’re going to have to translate it to either English or Tagalog. That is according to an ordinance the Quezon City government announced yesterday.
“There is a need for accompanying translations and/or its wordings in English the meaning of the foreign language business names in the signboards and/or signages of the establishments in Quezon City for easy identification and information on the nature of businesses,” the ordinance reads.
According to Rappler, some businesses including karaoke bars, grocery and convenience stores, and restaurants currently don’t include English translations for their business names.
While the ordinance was only announced yesterday, it had already been signed by Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista in August and took effect in October.
Those caught violating the ordinance could face a fine of up to PHP5,000 (US$100) and the cancellation of their business permit.
Quezon City is the biggest city in Metro Manila and the most populous city in the country, with over 3 million residents.
