Priest objects to DOH plan to distribute condoms in schools

As we predicted, there are people who would object to the  Department of Health (DOH) plan to distribute condoms in schools.

READ: DOH to start distributing condoms in schools next year

It may be recalled that the DOH had announced its plan to distribute condoms in schools starting next year as part of its strategy to deal with the sharp rise in the number of HIV and AIDS among the youth in the country.

“Fr. Jerome Secillano — the executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) public affairs committee — thinks that the DOH’s safe sex campaign is nothing but a ‘waste’ of taxpayers’ money,” reports Mia B. Billones on Journal Online.

Secillano — who is also the parish priest of the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Parish in Sampaloc, Manila — said, “Distributing condoms will only condone sexual activity among students.”

As such, Secillano added that the government “should invest more in educating people about the perils of ‘sporadic sexual activity’ than procuring and distributing condoms.”
