In Iligan City, about an hour away from Marawi, police have started monitoring several houses they believe could be housing the Islamic State-linked Maute terror group.

Iligan City Mayor Celso Regencia said yesterday that 12 properties in the city have titles owned by members of the Maute family, while 26 other properties are owned by former Marawi City Mayor Fahad Salic.

Salic, who was arrested in June 2017, had been charged for conspiring with the terror group engaged in an armed rebellion against the government.

According to ABS-CBN News, the properties were acquired long before the five-month-long Marawi siege that started in May last year.

Intelligence officers say that some residents have observed suspicious individuals in one of the properties in Barangay (village) Tomas Cabili.

Lenoy Roy Ga, a senior police official, said that many of the houses have already been abandoned but they will continue watching for any suspicious activities.
