Basketball is huge in the Philippines and the country’s greatest rivalry just had their latest clash yesterday.

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and defending champion De La Salle University (DLSU) went head to head yesterday afternoon during the last game in this season’s University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) basketball elimination round.

ADMU’s Blue Eagles entered the game with a 13-0 win-loss record including a first round win against DLSU’s Green Archers, but lost the chance for a sweep and an outright seat in the finals.

They were leading by seven points in the fourth quarter but the Green Archers turned the tide with 2:24  minutes left in the game and eventually won with a 79-76 score.

Both teams will move on to the final four semifinals together with the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and Adamson University (AdU) Soaring Falcons. As No. 1 and No. 2 seeds respectively, ADMU and DLSU both have a twice to beat advantage over the other teams.

Yesterday’s game was a seesaw battle and a classic nailbiter for the more than 13,000 people in the Smart Araneta Coliseum with the Blue Eagles ending the first and third quarters with a lead. (Quarter scores: 17-22, 37-35, 54-63, 79-76)

The first game in the semifinal round is on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum between DLSU and AdU.
