The best things in life are free, so they say. Filipino commuters can rejoice because next week, that will include rides on the MRT-3.

The Department of Transport (DOTr) announced today that the MRT-3 will offer free rides to the public on June 12, Wednesday in celebration of Philippine Independence Day.

The free rides will only be available during the rush hours from 7am to 9am and 7pm to 9pm.

The MRT-3 has 13 stations, including stops in Quezon City, Pasig City, Mandaluyong City, and Makati City.

The holiday commemorates June 12, 1898, the day the Philippines gained independence from Spain, a country that ruled it for more than 300 years.

The Philippines’ declaration of independence was made by the first Filipino president, General Emilio Aguinaldo, in his home in Kawit, Cavite province. However, Spain sold the Philippines to the United States for US$20 million, and the U.S. did not recognize the Philippines’ declaration of independence. This led to the Philippine-American War that started in 1899 and ended in 1902.

This year’s celebration marks the 121st anniversary of Philippine independence.
