This is a punishment that went terribly wrong.
A 9-year-old boy in Lantawan, Basilan province has died after his mother allegedly hit him for taking PHP50 (US$.94) from her wallet without permission.
In a phone interview with Coconuts Manila, Lantawan Municipal Police Station Crime Registrar Amor Mabalot said that after taking the money, the boy went to a nearby river to collect shells and went home wet, which angered the mother.
The mother also blamed her son for allegedly taking the money, leading her to allegedly tie up his hands and feet, cover his mouth with a cloth, and hit him using a piece of bamboo.
The mother found the boy’s lifeless body at around 5pm on the same day. He was brought to the Basilan General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
According to Mabalot, the family’s neighbors said that the mother has spanked the boy in the past.
The mother was eventually set free by the police yesterday morning after her husband decided not to press charges.
“[He] did not file a case against her due to financial constraints,” Mabalot said.
She explained that the husband was worried that no one would look after their two other children if his wife ended up in jail.
