The Mayon Volcano is about to erupt and authorities say it could be hazardous.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised its alert level on the active volcano from level 2 to level 3 last night, just as residents in surrounding areas evacuated their homes.

“For the past 24 hours, we have recorded around 141 rockfall events and two volcanic earthquakes, which would indicate the continued piling of lava in the summit and also flowing of lava at the southern flanks,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told ANC this morning.

Mayon Volcano or Mount Mayon is located in the province of Albay in the Bicol region, about 300 kilometers away from the capital Manila.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Phivolcs Bicol Chief Ed Laguerta said that the danger zone includes areas within a 7-kilometer radius from Mount Mayon. Phivolcs is still monitoring the volcano. Below, are photos of Mount Mayon they took this morning.

Phivolcs raised the alert level to 3 less than 24 hours after it was raised to level 2. According to their website, a level 3 alert status means “volcanic quakes and tremor may become more frequent,” and that eruption could happen within weeks if “increasing unrest” persists.

At least 1,547 families or 5,857 people have evacuated the area and are at evacuation centers in nearby schools, Rappler reported. The last time Mayon Volcano erupted was in 2014.
