In the Philippines, if you combine booze with karaoke, you’re either in for a really awesome night… or a deadly one.

For two friends in Navotas City, their night of karaoke and drinking turned from fun to macabre pretty quickly, and all over a song.

Anthony Mabansag, a 23-year-old fish port helper died after he was stabbed in the neck by his friend Arjhay Oliva three times as he slept in front of his house at about 1:30am, police said.

Alvin Mabansag, Anthony’s brother, heard the victim shout from the second floor of their house. He went down and saw his brother with the kitchen knife in his neck.

Alvin told police he saw Oliva at the crime scene before the suspect fled the scene.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Alvin said the two had an altercation while drinking and singing karaoke outside Mabansag’s house about an hour before the incident.

“They fought over a song,” the brother said in Filipino. He did not say what the song was or why he attacked his friend after he was already asleep.

Passions can run notoriously high during karaoke sessions in the Philippines. In 2010, Frank Sinatra’s My Way was banned from karoke bars in the country after people were killed for singing out of tune.

According to a report from the Manila Bulletin, Alvin does not know of any other possible motives Oliva might have had for allegedly stabbing his brother.

The police are still looking for Oliva, who has been previously spent time in jail.
