Executives of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) would have to take public transportation once a week if House Bill 6229, filed in the Philippine House of Representatives yesterday, would become law.
“Public servants without empathy do not deserve to serve in the LTFRB,” Ong was quoted in GMA News. “Public service improves when it is rendered with empathy and compassion.”
The bill comes after LTFRB executives suspended ride-sharing application Uber, the latest in a series of moves to tighten regulations over technology-based transportation services.

Filipinos commuters have expressed outrage on social media over the massive inconvenience caused by the LTFRB’s suspension.
The proposal would force employees not only to take public transportation but to take it during rush hour on their commute to the office from 6am to 9am and between 5pm and 8pm.

These are times when the MRT, buses, jeeps, and other forms of public transportation experience the highest volume of passengers.
Under the proposal, violators would be punished with administrative suspension for one month without pay for the first offense, a six-month suspension without pay for the second offense, and dismissal for the third offense.
If caught lying about taking public transportation, employees and executives could face a six-month suspension without pay for the first offense and dismissal for the second offense.
