Local gov’ts can enforce quarantines in Visayas and Mindanao, says COVID-19 task force

Local governments in Visayas and Mindanao can impose community quarantines in their respective districts, the government’s task force on COVID-19 said today.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said in a virtual presser that local government units in both islands can implement quarantines “if they deem necessary.”

He added that all government officials need to do is to coordinate the implementation of their quarantines with the Departments of Health and Interior and Local Government. Several mayors in Visayas and Mindanao had already quarantined their cities to curb the spread of COVID-19 after President Rodrigo Duterte put Luzon on lockdown last month.

Meanwhile, Nograles announced that tomorrow’s Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) will be marked with a special tribute to medical workers and other frontliners. He encouraged the public to applaud for them each day starting tomorrow at 5pm—a public gesture that started in the United Kingdom which calls it “Clap for Carers.” He also urged Filipinos to pay tribute to frontliners by posting encouraging messages on social media at the same hours.

“Every day, beginning tomorrow, we urge our countrymen to go to their doorways or their windows to applaud all our heroes still working on the frontlines,” he said. “We can sing or dance for our frontliners [on social media] to show our love for them and send them good vibes in these challenging times.”
