Various prohibited items were seized in yet another inspection of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa on Wed, Nov 11.

Today’s inspection under the so-called “Oplan Galugad,” the third to occur for the month of November, yielded air-condition units, television sets, cellphones, and bladed weapons. Also found inside the prison were washing machines, four pet dogs, and an air compressor.

Beds, dorms, and even the bushes at the gardens were searched. A mosque, a Buddhist temple, and a chapel were also inspected.

The first two raids yielded more than 8,000 rounds of ammunition, around 30 firearms, appliances such as refrigerators, airconditioning units, flat-screen TVs, and cellphones. Drugs and alcohol were also discovered.

A search team composed of 300 personnel swooped down on different buildings at the maximum security compound that houses about 7,500 inmates.

Authorities said the number one cause for the presence of prohibited items in the national penitentiary is connivance between jail guards and inmates.

The items are usually smuggled in with construction material, sacks of rice, and even via the garbage truck. Others simply toss the contraband over the fence or have them brought in by visitors.

More than 20 jail personnel have been found to be in connivance with inmates and several others are being investigated.

Nets around the fences are being put up and two X-ray units will soon be up and running at the entrances.
