A regional trial court judge handling a high profile drug case involving a politician was killed by unidentified motorcycle-riding suspects in Ozamiz City yesterday afternoon.
Edmundo Pintac was shot dead by suspects in Barangay (village) Banadero in Ozamiz at around 4:20pm, Rappler reported.
The suspects fled the scene of the crime.
Pintac was the judge handling the case of illegal possession of firearms and drugs against Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog and her brother Reynaldo Jr.
The siblings were caught after a raid of their father Mayor Reynaldo Sr.’s house last year. The raid left at least 14 people dead, including the mayor, his wife Susan, and his brother Octavio, who was a provincial board member, reported Interaksyon.
Reynaldo Sr. was linked to the illegal drug trade by President Rodrigo Duterte.
The Philippine Star reported that Pintac denied the Parojinog siblings’ request last year to attend the wake of their parents.
According to a report by ABS-CBN News, Ozamiz police think that Pintac was driving alone and the killers were possibly waiting for him on the road.
Bullets from .45 calber guns were found at the crime scene.
In a statement, Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro asked members of the Philippine National Police to find the perpetrators of the crime.
She said: “I’m calling on the Philippine National Police to exert all means and efforts to apprehend the perpetrators at the soonest possible time. I have also instructed the court administrator to coordinate with all law enforcement officers to bring to justice those responsible for this crime.”
The Commission of Human Rights said they will investigate the case.
