The Department of Trade and Industry said Monday it would heighten monitoring of a price freeze on basic goods in the cities of Iligan and General Santos, where many of those displaced by fighting in Marawi City have escaped to.

Supply has been stable so far based on the DTI’s monitoring, said trade undersecretary Teodora Pascua.

“We will be sending out notices to them to ensure that their distributors have adequate supplies, not only in the areas of conflict, but all over Mindanao, kasi yan ang coverage ng emergency (that is the coverage of the emergency),” Pascua said.

The Price Act requires a freeze on the cost of basic goods in areas under martial law. President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial rule in Mindanao last week following deadly clashes between government troops and Maute extremists.

The freeze covers bread, fresh and canned fish and meat, coffee, salt, bottled water, processed milk, instant noodles, soap and candles among others.
