Former soldier kills woman, self in Cavite shooting rampage over ‘maligned reputation’

A former Philippine Army member went on a shooting spree in General Trias, Cavite on Sunday morning, killing a woman and injuring five others before taking his own life.

Suspect Junny Palacio, 47, a resident of Santiago Village, was working in construction after retiring from the military. Cavite Police Chief Col. Marlon Santos said that according to witnesses, a seemingly irritated Palacio went “looking for certain people who were allegedly maligning his reputation as a contractor,” The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports.

Palacio was armed with a .38-caliber revolver when he charged into a public market just past 8am to reportedly confront two of his victims — Murharma Bautista, 59, and retired Philippine Army member Albert Sorio, 57. The suspect shot Bautista dead on the spot and injured Sorio, GMA News reports.

In the same area, he also shot tricycle driver Recto Marbit, 47; and a certain Pilar Bacaoco, 34. Two police officials who responded to the incident — Chief Master Sgt. Zaldy Espiritu, and Senior Master Sgt. Reynante Tan — were also among those injured and rushed to the hospital, the Philippine Star reports.

According to police reports, other officers cornered and tried to apprehend Palacio, but the suspect put the gun to his forehead and shot himself dead.

Investigations are still ongoing.
