He was just five kilometers away from the finish line.

An assistant professor at the University of Sto. Tomas’ College of Fine Arts (CFAD) died on Monday after suffering cardiac death syndrome.

Fernando Tores, 46, was rushed to the Manila Doctors Hospital after collapsing during the National Geographic Earth Day Run on Sunday morning. He joined the 42-kilometer category and was just 5 kilometers away when he fainted.

The photography professor had already been suffering from an “abnormal beating of the heart or arrhythmia,” said the university’s official publication The Varsitarian.

“I think his greatest achievement, without him realizing it, is how he has inspired and helped countless students,” said Fernando’s sister Carolina to the student publication. “He really cares for the welfare of the students, he wants to see them reach their full potential.”

According to medical officials, Fernando had a weak pulse and no recorded brain activity on the morning of April 23. He died the next day.

Those who wish to see him for the last time may visit his remains at Arlington Memorial Chapel, Quezon City from April 25 to 29.
