A Filipino radioman has died after he was shot multiple times in an ambush early this morning.

DWZR Zoom Radio broadcaster Joey Llana, 38 years old, was driving out of his home in Daraga, Albay and on the way to work when he was shot by still unidentified gunmen at around 4:45am, ABS-CBN News reported.

According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), he was shot 14 times with .45 caliber and 9mm pistols.

Rappler reported that Llana was declared dead at 6:05am.

Authorities are still investigating the incident but the NUJP told Rappler that if proven that the ambush was related to his work as a journalist, this would be the 12th media killing under President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.

However, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that police had found seven sachets of alleged shabu (methamphetamine) inside a sling bag in Llana’s car.

Llana’s brother, Jose Llana told Inquirer that he believes the drugs were planted.  “He doesn’t use [a] sling bag,” he said.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque condemned the killing of Llana and called it “another infringement on the rights to life and a free press.”

In May, radio broadcaster Edmund Sestoso was also shot and killed while riding a tricycle on his way home from the radio station in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental.
