Remember when you didn’t have grown-up responsibilities and you actually had the time to play video games with your loved ones? Sony’s PlayStation does.

In fact, the Facebook page of PlayStation Asia announced yesterday that its first ever console is making a comeback this December for PHP6,190 (US$114.65).

Sony even included the classic intro music, which plays whenever the old school PS1 is first opened. If that piece of news didn’t give you goosebumps, stop lying, because we’re sure it definitely did.

At a time when so many people are nostalgic about the 1990s, the reintroduction of the classic PS1 was met with excitement by tons of Filipino fans.

Take for example gamer Danah Maniego, who told Coconuts Manila through Facebook messenger that she was stoked about the announcement.

She said in Filipino: “Like, those were [part of] my childhood days and Sony suddenly had that kind of surprise. I mean, PS4 (PlayStation 4) is okay, but PS1? That’s the OG [original]. PS1 started the whole craze with video games.”

“I remember when I was a child, that was the first thing I would look for, then I would take a shower and eat, then go back to playing. Never knew I would become addicted to playing video games. It brings back memories, really, like when we were kids and [it was all just about] simple joys. Social media didn’t exist back then,” Maniego said in a mix of English and Filipino.

She added that she was also happy about the news because playing the classic PS1 was her bonding activity with her brother and cousins.

Maniego might end up buying the new PS1. She said: “With that introductory price, it’s so tempting. Like, they’re (Sony) so good because their market is 90s kids and we’re all almost working [professionals]. It’s like our holy grail.”

Sony’s promotional video shows the new PS1 looking smaller than the classic version. In fact, it’s 45 percent smaller than the original unit.

Similar to the old version, this one will also have two ergonomically designed controllers which come with two shoulder buttons.

It will come pre-loaded with 20 video games including Final Fantasy VII, TEKKEN 3, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash!, and Wild Arms among others.

The reimagined console will officially launch globally on Dec. 3. (Monday), the 24th anniversary of the first PlayStation’s release.

The video has over 800,000 views and 17,000 shares. Netizens mostly tagged one another and people were pretty hyped about the announcement.

This includes Facebook user AJ Manzano who said in Filipino: “I miss this, especially when you and your siblings fight and one of you will hide one of the joysticks (controllers).”

“If it has Steel ReignGran Turismo 1, and Gran Turismo 2, I’m throwing money at it,” Michael David Aguila shared.

Although it turns out, some people haven’t really lost their first console. Facebook user Adrian de Leon wrote: “Why buy one if mine is still working?”

“There are still classic consoles available in the market that are functioning,” Rem Salongkong pointed out.
