EDSA traffic about to get more bearable with free Wi-Fi starting June 12

Hellish traffic in EDSA is about to get a wee bit more bearable starting Monday, June 12, as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) launches free Wi-Fi.

According to a statement from the Presidential Communications Office released Friday, the DICT — in partnership with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) — will launch “free Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet services, dubbed as ‘Alay Para sa Malayang Pilipino’.”

Roughly a year ago, providing free Wi-Fi is just one of the promises made by President Rodrigo Duterte during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Access points and infrastructure enhancements were made along Metro Manila’s thoroughfare, especially on MRT train stations along the 24-km stretch. According to the same statement from PTV, service testing was done Saturday, June 10.

In a report by tech website Yugatech, motorists and commuters will get free access to the EDSA Wi-Fi network for the first 30 minutes. What happens after 30 minutes? We’re still trying to find out.

Here are the partner agencies and companies for the “Alay Para sa Malayang Pilipino” free Wi-Fi project: “Department of Transportation – Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT3), PLDT and SMART, Globe Telecom, ABRATIQUE & ASSOCIATES, Metro Rail Transit Corporation (MRT DevCo), Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA, Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA), Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), and the local governments of Quezon City, Makati City, Mandaluyong and Pasay City.”
