President Rodrigo Duterte led a boodle fight of chicken-based dishes in San Fernando, Pampanga, Monday to show that chicken is safe to eat amid a bird flu outbreak in the province.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, former president and current representative of Pampanga, the affected area, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol, and other government officials joined Duterte in the boodle fight.

Boodle fight is a style of eating that began in the Philippine military, where food is prepared across a long table lined wtih banana leaves. Food, rice and drinks are eaten using your bare hands.

Chicken barbecue, fried chicken, fried duck, eggs and balut were served in the boodle fight.

Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial also hosted a similar event where she ate KFC in front of reporters to show that locally-sourced chicken is safe to eat.

According to World Health Organization guidelines, poultry products should be cooked above 70 degrees Celsius to kill potential Avian flu virus.

Piñol said the government has been successful in containing the bird flu outbreak in portions of Pampanga. Duterte, meanwhile, vowed assistance to the farmers affected.
