President Rodrigo Duterte today declared June 5 as a holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr, an important Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, or the holy month of fasting.

The holiday was made official through Proclamation No. 729, which was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on behalf of Duterte. It was declared a holiday upon the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, reported The Philippine Daily Inquirer.

According to the proclamation, the day was declared a holiday to give all Filipinos “the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr.”

The proclamation was signed yesterday and made public today.

Also called “Eid al-Fitr,” the celebration is known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast” and is celebrated by Muslims by praying and giving to charity. In the Philippines, it will begin in the evening of June 4 and end in the evening of June 5.
