Amid the controversy surrounding Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s remark referring to murdered Australian rape victim Jacqueline Hamill, Australian ambassador Amanda Gorely expressed her opinion via Twitter on Mon, Apr 18.
Hamill was raped before beign killed during a hostage-taking incident at the Davao Penal Colony in 1989.
Gorely had tweeted, “Rape and murder should never be joked about or trivialised. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable anytime, anywhere.”
For his part, US ambassador Philip Goldberg said in a CNN Philippines interview, “I can only agree with [my] colleague from the Australian Embassy.”
When asked for his reaction to the two ambassadors’ statement, Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted Duterte as saying, “You’re not Filipinos. Shut up. Do not interfere because it’s election time.”
