DOH confirms 2 new Zika virus cases recorded in Cavite

The Department of Health (DOH) on Fri, Oct 28, said two new cases of Zika virus were recorded in Cavite.

The DOH said the two new cases bring the total number of Zika virus patients in the country to 19.

The two new cases bring the total of confirmed Zika virus cases this year to 17, according to the health department.

Aside from the two new Zika patients in Cavite, there are 12 patients in Iloilo, as well as in Mandaluyong (2), Muntinlupa (1), Antipolo (1), and Cebu (1). One case was previously attributed to Makati, but it turned out it was a man who worked in the area but actually lives in Mandaluyong.

Zika, which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is usually not life-threatening but has been linked to a rise in birth defects in other countries, where hundreds of babies have been born with unusually small heads in recent years.

The DOH has advised citizens who are experiencing Zika symptoms (skin rashes, fever, red eyes, and headache) to immediately consult doctors. —report from Kori Quintos, ABS-CBN News
