After three weeks of staying in evacuation centers, displaced residents of the besieged city of Marawi have been reporting illnesses, including fever and diarrhea.
Around 39,200 evacuees are currently staying in Iligan City, while the fight between government troops and terrorists belonging to the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups continue.
In Barangay Maria Cristina alone, around 1,139 people have been enduring the conditions in evacuation centers where it can be very hot and humid in the afternoon.
Most evacuees, especially the children and the elderly, have been getting coughs, colds and fever. Some are already suffering diarrhea for several days already.
The local government of Iligan and government agencies of Region 10 and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have been providing food, water and medicines for the evacuees.
Doctors and nurses are also regularly seen inside the evacuation centers to tend to the immediate health needs of the displaced families.
Non-government organizations are also helping in providing clean and potable water in the evacuation centers. The government said they are closely monitoring the situation.
Aside from those who are in evacuation centers, there also a lot of displaced Marawi residents staying at the homes of their relatives in Iligan or nearby towns.
