The Philippines welcomed today 3,538 new doctors, out of 4,704 examinees, with the release of the Professional Regulation Commission’s Physician Licensure’s Examinations.

Among those who passed the exam, released as the country continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, is Tricia Robredo, the daughter of Vice President Leni Robredo. The vice president, a vocal critic of the government, announced her daughter’s achievement via a Facebook post where the former wrote, “Tricia is now a doctor.”

Tricia has an older sister, Aika Robredo, and a younger sibling, Jillian Robredo. Her father is the late Naga City mayor and Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo.

Other noteworthy passers include actress Angeli Gonzales, Alec Dungo, who was part of the cast of the reality show Pinoy Big Brother; Sofia “Pia” Babao Guballa, the granddaughter of actress Caridad Sanchez; and Tiffany Grace Uy, who holds the highest recorded grade in the history of the University of the Philippines (UP) since World War II. Uy was one of the exam’s top notchers, landing in fifth place with 88.08%. Her name is now trending on Twitterverse thanks to her new achievement.

Jomel Garcia Lapides of the UP Manila emerged on top of all examinees with 88.67%. Patrick Joseph Amunategui Magubat (University of Saint La Salle) and Adrian Emmanuel Diago Teves (University of Santo Tomas, UST) both emerged at second place with an 88.58% rating. In third place are Henrick Ryan Chua Fong of UST and Raphael Cecilio Salazar Rodolfo of UP Manila, with 88.33%.

The Cebu Institute of Medicine was the top-performing school, with all of its graduates passing the physicians’ exam. The institution was followed by UP Manila (98.63%), Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (98.60%), Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (97.58%), and UST (95.61%).

The new doctors will have to deal with the challenges posed by the coronavirus, which has infected countless Filipino medical professionals. A doctor Coconuts Manila spoke with said that many nurses and physicians have resigned from their posts this year due to burnout. Meanwhile, several nurses working in government hospitals have complained that they have yet to receive their hazard pay.
