Carlos Yulo is now the Philippines’ most successful gymnast after leading the Philippines to its best finish in recent years, snagging five gold medals and two silver medals at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The 22-year-old gymnast won in the men’s vault and horizontal bars, and landed in second place in the parallel bars at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace.

Yulo also dominated in the all-around, floor exercise and rings events, and is the athlete with the most medals so far at the Games, which ends next week.

Yulo scored 14.700 points in the vault final, emerging over Tikumporn Surintornta of Thailand at 14.250 points, and team member Juancho Besena at 14.017 points.

The gymnast, however, tied with Vietnam’s Phuong Thanh Dinh at 13.867 points in the horizontal bars final, with both athletes walking away with the gold.

Yulo’s stunning performance at the SEA Games has also landed him a cool PHP1.8 million (US$34,315) reward from the Philippine government for when he triumphantly returns home.
