Calesa horse hit by bus may have ‘suffered great pain,’ says PAWS

A horse that was side-swept by a bus in Sta. Mesa, Manila this week has received free medical help, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) said Sun, Jan 22.

Veterinarians Romy and Percy Modomo found that the horse, Castaño, did not suffer any serious injury in the hit-and-run incident but may have “suffered great pain,” PAWS shared in a Facebook post.

“The father-son veterinary team checked all of the animal’s legs and was happy to report that the horse did not have any fracture or serious injury. Castaño though must have suffered great pain which led to loss of appetite and weakness for the past few days,” the group wrote.

PAWS said Castaño was given painkillers and an anti-tetanus shot on Sat night, Jan 21, and is expected to make a full recovery on Sunday.

According to witnesses, a Green Star passenger bus with body number 2205 and plate number ACD 4182 hit the horse which was drawing a calesa along Magsaysay Boulevard.

Instead of stopping, the bus sped on leaving the injured horse slumped beside a passenger jeepney.

The driver of the calesa said he and his passenger also suffered bruises in the incident.

The group Lawyers for Commuters Safety and Protection has urged the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to suspend the license of the bus driver involved in the incident.

The LTFRB said it will summon the driver and operator of the bus to a hearing.

PAWS also promised to help calesa driver Dong Manson to file charges against the bus driver for violating the Animal Welfare Act.

Manson said the horse has been with him for three years now.
