Cab driver shot dead by police passenger over alleged attempted robbery

A taxi driver was shot dead early this morning along the C-5 road in Parañaque City after allegedly trying to rob his passenger, who turned out to be a cop.

The passenger, Police Staff Sgt. Ronald Carpio of the Parañaque City Police, said he boarded the cab from Macapagal Boulevard in Pasay City, and asked the driver, named Elmer Tubil, to drop him off at a condominium along Dr. A. Santos Avenue in Parañaque, ABS-CBN News reports.

Carpio said that Tubil made a U-turn and passed through a poorly lit area of the C-5 extension road, then pulled over and allegedly announced the robbery while threatening the cop with a revolver, Radyo Inquirer reports.

Carpio, in retaliation, pulled out his 9mm service pistol and shot the driver, who died on the spot, CNN Philippines reports.

According to his driver’s license, Tubil was a resident of Tandang Sora, in Quezon City.

The Parañaque City police said that they already have a record of Tubil’s license plate number after several earlier complaints from passengers accused him of committing the same crime.

Police also allegedly recovered from the dead cab driver packets of what is believed to be crystal meth.
