“Have you tried swimming in a sea of beer?”

That’s what Cotabato Vice Governor Shirlyn Macasarte Villanueva asked in Filipino on Facebook last night when she shared photos of a beer truck accident that happened in the province’s town of Aleosan yesterday afternoon.

Beer lovers, you might want to close your eyes for this.

In the photos, cases upon cases of beer can be seen scattered on the Davao-Cotabato National Highway, with broken bottles surrounding them.

According to Aleosan Municipal Police Station’s report of the incident sent to Coconuts Manila, the accident occurred at around 4:20pm in a blind curved portion of the highway.

Behind the truck’s wheel was 33-year-old driver Rodelio Romualdo Soberano. The vehicle was carrying cases of Gold Eagle beer from Davao City on the way to Midsayap, Cotabato when two motorcycles from the opposite lane accidentally encroached the lane where the truck was.

As Soberano tried to avoid the motorcycles, the rope binder that kept the cases of beer fastened broke, leading to the spill.

While it caused heavy traffic, no one was hurt.

PO2 Villy Roy Talha, the investigator assigned to the case, told Coconuts in a phone interview that many of the bottles broke or were damaged because of the accident. Still, this did not stop some residents from taking advantage of the situation.

When asked if people took home bottles of beer, Talha said in Filipino, “It can’t be avoided, you can’t control people.”

You truly can’t.

Just last week, people ran to a similar incident in Phuket, Thailand wherein a truck carrying the popular local beer Leo overturned in front of a 7-Eleven and scattered cases of beer on the street. It was an instant beer buffet.
