Beep, Beep: With LRT-2 partially closed, Angkas gives free rides to stranded passengers

Metro Manila has been bogged down in a transport crisis since a fire ravaged the LRT-2 late last week, leading to the temporary closure of the entire line yesterday. It has resumed partial operations today, with the line open from Cubao to Recto, but three stations — Santolan, Katipunan, and Anonas — will remain closed for the next nine months.

With thousands of commuters scrambling to find alternative ways to reach their destinations, ride-hailing app Angkas announced today in a Tweet that they’ll be offering free round trip rides from Santolan to Recto.

“Free rides from Recto to Santolan Station (and vice-versa), anyone?” Angkas said in its tweet. The company, known for its cheeky social media posts, also attached photos of its riders and their motorcycles parked near the LRT-2’s stations.

The free rides will be available from today until Thursday, from 8am to 10am and from 5pm to 7pm.

Naturally, netizens were happy with the free rides, even though they acknowledged they’re just a band-aid solution. @Forsakayn joked that Angkas’ “back hurt from carrying all the government’s responsibilities.”

Aside from Angkas, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is providing free round-trip transportation from Santolan to Cubao from 7am to 7pm daily. The Department of Transport has also deployed 30 buses and 20 public utility vehicles that will ferry passengers every day between Santolan and Cubao.
