Basketball game leads to stabbing in Quezon City High School

A heated basketball game led to violence in Quezon City yesterday when one of the players stabbed his five opponents after losing.

The incident happened in the Batasan National High School yesterday afternoon and involved minors, according to multiple reports.

Batasan Police chief Police Lt. Col. Joel Villanueva told ABS-CBN News that the rumble was between the 15-year-old suspect and five other boys. According to a statement from the Department of Education (DepEd), the victims were all Junior High School students.

The suspect’s team allegedly asked for a rematch after the victims won the basketball game but the latter did not agree to one, which led to an argument, Remate reported. According to the DepEd, the stabbing happened later that day at around 5pm.

The suspect allegedly stabbed the victims with a knife, leaving them wounded. School officials administered first aid treatment on the victims before they were brought to the East Avenue Medical Center, also in Quezon City.

Four of the victims are now in stable condition but one boy, also 15 years old, is still recuperating in the hospital after he sustained stab wounds in the liver.

The suspect is now in police custody and authorities are investigating the incident.

DepEd Regional Director Wilfredo Cabral said that school officials who are found to have failed to provide a safe school environment will be “dealt with appropriately.”
