Filipino seismologists have raised Alert level 2 over Taal after the volcano exhibited increasing unrest which may lead to an eruption.
In a bulletin released today at 8am, seismologists reported that they had recorded 28 volcanic tremor episodes, four low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and one hybrid earthquake at a depth of about 1.5 kilometers underneath the volcano island for the past 24 hours. Tremors have increased their seismic energy, and last from three to 17 minutes.
Seismologists said that there was “increased magmatic and hydrothermal activity at shallow depths” of the volcano island for the past month.
“The total number of volcanic tremor events has risen to 866 since the onset of increased activity on 13 February,” they said, adding that the current developments “may or may not” lead to an eruption.
Taal’s last eruption was in January 2020.
The alert has gotten netizens worried, and the word “Taal” is currently trending on Philippine Twitter. One of them, a certain @TayNewClownery, wrote, “Taal Volcano is now on Alert Level 2. This means there is a probable magmatic activity that may or may not lead to an eruption. Please pray for the people living near the volcano.”
