Abu Sayyaf frees two Malaysian hostages

Two Malaysian sailors held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf were rescued in a military operation by the Philippine Fleet-Marine Ready Force in Sulu on Thurs, March 23.

Tayudin Anjut, 45, and Abduramin Bin Sumas, 62, were among the five crewmen who were kidnapped in July last year in the waters of Lahad Datu, Sabah.

Abu Sayyaf had allegedy demanded PHP100 million for the release of the hostages, but military spokesman Colonel Edgard Arevalo emphasized that no ransom was paid.

According to ABS-CBN News, “the troops were dispatched to the area after villagers tipped them off on the presence of some 30 Abu Sayyaf fighters and at least 5 hostages.”

Anjut and Sumas were left behind as the bandits tried to flee.

The freed hostages will be brought to Camp General Teodulfo Bautista on Jolo Island for debriefing
