An abandoned baby survived the sun’s extreme heat and an army of ants after he was found in a filthy grassy area in Cagayan de Oro City on Sunday.

According to the Macasandig Police, the baby boy was about 4 months old and was seen covered in ants at around noon by two people, ABS-CBN News reported today.

The concerned citizens then brought the baby to the police station, prompting the officers to call the City Social Welfare Department (CSWD) and Oro Rescue so they can treat the child’s body which was then covered with ant bites and sunburn.

Abandoned babies are not uncommon in the Philippines, where many remain uneducated about family planning and abortion is still illegal. Some are left outside churches while others are more brutally left inside plastic bags.

This one has a happier ending, though. Assistant CSWD officer Nida Paña said the baby has been brought to the hospital and is in stable condition.

He is now in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Regional Reception and Study Center for Children.
