This is not the kind of dog story you want to read about on a Monday morning.

Sixty-four dead dogs were found inside a van after the driver was stopped at a police checkpoint in Lemery, Batangas early morning yesterday.

ABS-CBN News reported that the vehicle carrying the dogs was en route Baguio City.

The checkpoint was reportedly created when police received information from an unnamed group about a dog meat trade happening in the area. The same report states that the vehicle tried to avoid the checkpoint.

“When they saw the checkpoint, they were about to maneuver heading back [from where they came from], going to Nasugbu [Batangas], but one of our [police] vehicles were already waiting for them [from behind],” Police Senior Inspector Garry Abregunda of the Lemery Police said in Filipino.

The police arrested three guys, including one minor, who were aboard the van. One of them also had a standing warrant of arrest in Imus, Cavite for the same crime.

Authorities recovered the bodies of 64 dead dogs that weighed over 690 kilos; they were brought to the National Meat Inspection Service for proper disposal.

Police are still investigating where the dogs came from.

The suspects refused to give a statement, the report stated. The two adults will face charges for violating the Animal Welfare Act. They may be fined PHP5,000 (US$92.95) per dog and be subject to imprisonment for 1 to 4 years. The minor is now in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
