What was supposed to be just a sleepover turned into a nightmare.

A 17-year-old Grade 12 student was arrested yesterday for the killing of a public school teacher in Pio Duran, a town in Albay province.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer identified the victim as Mylene Durante, who was killed at Oringon Elementary School on Tuesday night at 11pm.

According to the same report, the 23-year-old Durante and two Grade 6 pupils were sleeping in the principal’s office at the time when the knife-wielding assailant — an unnamed Grade 12 student from another school — came in and attacked them.

“The teacher tried to save the lives of the children by covering them,” Police Senior Inspector Mayvell Barcia-Gonzales, the spokesperson for Albay’s police provincial command, told Rappler.

Bombo Radyo stated that Durante was reportedly allowed by the school administration to sleep in the office because it was difficult for her to go home in Polangui, a town an hour’s drive away.

Inquirer added that the students had volunteered to sleep over at the principal’s office to keep Durante company.

Authorities found the teacher’s lifeless body, which had several stab wounds, just a few meters from the door of the office, the same report stated.

Her students, who were taken to the hospital for medical treatment, sustained only minor wounds.

The Department of Education (DepEd) director for the Bicol region, Gilbert Sadsad, said in a statement posted to Facebook yesterday that they were deeply saddened by the incident.

“We will be conducting a fact-finding investigation on this and we will accord the necessary actions for our learners and teachers impacted by this tragic incident,” the statement reads. It added that they will be working closely with authorities.

Inquirer reported that authorities are still investigating the motive behind the killing.
